Awards

The Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution provides numerous awards for conference attendees, including the Walter M. Fitch Award, Young Investigator Travel Awards, Undergraduate Travel and Mentoring Awards, Registration Awards, and Carers Travel Award. The applications for these awards (except the Child Care Travel Awards) are handled through the Abstract Submission System. The Carers Travel Award application is through the Registration System. For Registration Award Candidate: Please do not make registration until your acceptance will be notified on March 15, 2018.

1) The Walter M. Fitch Award

Eligibility: Current graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who received their primary doctoral-level degree no earlier than one year prior to the start of the annual meeting of the society. A candidate for the award must become member of the Society at least a month before the first day of the annual meeting.

Applicants are required to submit:
  • An abstract (250 word max) for the proposed presentation
  • A one page expanded summary of the research, including an explanation of the broad significance or importance of the work
  • A Curriculum Vitae

Contest: A committee convened by the SMBE Council will choose eight finalists from among the applications. Each selected finalist will present a 15-minute talk in the Walter M. Fitch Symposium at the annual meeting. Based on these presentations, a winner will be chosen by an anonymous expert panel and awarded the Walter M. Fitch Prize (US $2000). All finalists will receive a one-year, online student/postdoc MBE subscription and travel support for attending the meeting.

2) Young Investigator Travel Awards

Eligibility: Members of SMBE, who are either graduate students (awarded a primary degree and enrolled full-time for a post-graduate degree – Masters, Doctorate or Higher-Diploma) or postdoctoral researchers are eligible to apply. A candidate for the award must be a member of the Society at the time of application at least a month before the first day of the annual meeting.

Applicants are required to submit:
  • An abstract (250 word max) for your proposed presentation
  • A one page expanded summary of the research, including an explanation of the broad significance or importance of the work
  • A Curriculum Vitae

Process: The awardees are determined after review of application materials by one or more committees that will include at least one member of SMBE Council. The selection committee pays particular attention to enhancing geographical and gender diversity.

3) Undergraduate Travel and Mentoring Awards

Eligibility: Applicants must be undergraduate students at the time of application.

Applicants are required to submit:
  • 250 word abstract, describing the research you will present in your poster
  • 250 word statement describing your year of study, subject and institution, and motivation for attending the SMBE meeting (why you want to attend, what you expect to gain)
  • brief ~250 word letter of confirmation and support from an academic supervisor

Grant recipients will prepare and present a poster describing their work at the meeting. Instructions for preparing posters along with mentoring will be available for help with poster preparation.

Awards: The total value of each of these awards is $1500 to $2000, depending whether intercontinental travel is involved

4) Registration Awards

Eligibility: Applicants must be post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, or undergraduate students at the time of application.

Undergraduate applicants will be required to submit:
  • 250 word abstract, describing the research you will present in your poster
  • 250 word statement describing your year of study, subject and institution, and motivation for attending the SMBE meeting (why you want to attend, what you expect to gain
  • brief ~250 word letter of confirmation and support from an academic supervisor
Graduate students and post-doctoral researchers will be required to submit:
